New Tools and Resources from UC IPM

Oct 14, 2015

UC IPM is pleased to announce the availability of new tools for IPM in alfalfa. As part of the California Department of Pesticide Regulation's contract to evaluate critical uses of chlorpyrifos in alfalfa, an innovative Decision Support Tool (DST) was developed to support insecticide decision making around key insect pests. The tool supports the use of

chlorpyrifos (Lorsban and other generic products) for those times and situations where it makes for the best practice and provide multiple alternative practices and AIs for other situations. This decision support tool is embedded in the UC IPM Pest Management Guidelines (PMG) or accessed directly.

The DST, an app available on most portable smart phones and tablets, smoothly integrates the content rich PMG into a single, easy to read report which includes:

  • Sampling and assessment guidelines
  • Non-chemical approaches
  • Alternative insecticides

Training in the use of this decision is being provided throughout California in the 6 months. For alfalfa, here are the training locations:

Another support tool that is being developed and for field testing is iPIPE, integrated Pest Information Platform for Education and Extension. This tool is part of a national USDA-AFRI grant effort and is being adapted for alfalfa in CA. I am looking for people to try it out.

The value of iPIPE-Alfalfa lies in its ability to link distant alfalfa communities together to share information on pest outbreaks. Available on computers and smart devices, outbreaks can be recorded and communicated to other iPIPE users across the state. We can now track outbreaks as they occur and share management approaches.

For more information, look at iPIPE website http://ed.ipipe.org/ and contact Pete Goodell (pbgoodell@ucanr.edu; 559 646-6515)

Thanks for your interest in UC IPM Alfalfa programs.
