2021-22 UC Small Grain Variety Testing Results

Oct 3, 2022

Results for the 2021-2022 fall-planted UC Small Grain Variety Trials are now available at:

Due to changing trends in California small grain production, there is a growing need for information on variety-specific forage biomass productivity. As a result, during the 2021-22 season, we measured forage yields for wheat, triticale, barley and oats at two of our trial locations, in addition to our continuing grain assessments. Both boot-stage and soft-dough stage forage yields were measured, and the resulting summaries are included in the 2022 results under the 'Fall Planted Forage Yield' section:

Forage quality for these trials will be available later this year.

As in previous years, grain results can be viewed within an interactive environment that summarizes small grain varieties by crop type across multiple locations and season:

as well as an interactive environment that enables the exploration of data by individual site year:

All grain results can also be viewed and downloaded as static tables and figures, with additional information about site characteristics and crop management here:

Please note that grain protein estimates for the 2022 season are based on NIR analysis. These values will eventually be calibrated via combustion analysis. As a result of this analysis, absolute values may change, but relative values among varieties will not.

We appreciate the tremendous contributions from collaborators who made this year's trial possible!
